The Vancouver Island Discovery Centre is a community-based economic development initiative in collaboration with renowned exhibit designer Aldrich Pears & Associates. The centre presents a tourism-based showcase of Vancouver Island’s many diverse environments and its huge range of amenities and attractions. This highly immersive exhibit experience, surrounds a a massive hollowed out 18-foot cedar tree trunk, so kids can play and climb inside it.
Throughout the discovery centre is one ingenious exhibit after another: A majestic killer whale breaks the surface of rippling plexiglass water, complete with fully visible underwater vegetation. A noble eagle sits atop tall timbers, high above a rustic bike trail bridge. Snowdrifts pile around log ski cabin. Visitors can peer into cutaway views of underground marmot burrows to experience the life of local wildlife. Trees are identified by their different characteristics and “personalities”. The plethora of Vancouver Island’s outdoor sports is out in full force: skiing, sportfishing, biking, kayaking, snowboarding and others are represented.
