A Landmark Resort Gets A Mountaintop Restaurant Befitting Its Historic Olympic Glory

The 1960 Winter Olympics in Squaw Valley were the first ever to be held in North America. This honour came to define Squaw Valley as one of the continent’s preeminent Ski Resorts. “The Arc”, this Mountain Resort Food Court, had not been renovated since the 1980s and was badly in need of updating, so, in terms of theming, the mountain’s storied past was a natural place to start.

3DS transformed the space by revolutionizing traffic flow in the servery. Customers had previously exhibited “herd” behaviour, queueing in lines and constricting movement. 3DS opened traffic to a free, unrestricted pattern, with comfortable room for all. Strategically-placed elements such as colourful “Grab & Go” impulse buy stations helped loosen flow.

Stylistically, this 13,000 square foot design/build could not be more current. Custom tray rails with cutout metal patterns are complemented by matching menu boards. Reclaimed & recycled materials are applied extensively. The facility’s two Bars boast a salvaged wood top and a polished concrete countertop. Graphics played a major role, with historic images featured in custom light fixtures, bar panels and video monitors, and giant wall murals created a spacious “forest view”.
